  • Weight Science is extremely complex. Being overweight or obese is a disease that leads to many other diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, depression, arthritis, cancer and other chronic conditions which ultimately reduces quality of life and life years. Being an Obesity Medicine specialist, Dr. Douros recognizes that Overweight/Obesity is a disease and she is able to identify and treat Obesity with targeted therapeutics and lifestyle modification which allow her patients to reach a healthy weight and maintain it long term.

  • Dr. Douros sees a variety of patients with a large spectrum of weight loss needs. She treats patients who are still at a fairly healthy weight but are experiencing unexplained weight gain to patients that are severely obese.

  • The neuroendocrine system is made up of nerves and gland cells. It makes hormones and releases them into the bloodstream. Sometimes, the communication between the brain and the body regarding our fat store status can cause difficulty with healthy weight management.

  • The American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) serves the public and the field of obesity medicine by maintaining standards for assessment and credentialing physicians. Certification as an ABOM diplomate signifies specialized knowledge in the practice of obesity medicine and distinguishes a physician as having achieved competency in obesity/overweight care.

  • Douros Healthy Weight Institute does not directly bill insurance. We do provide patients with superbills that they can send to their insurance companies for reimbursement or credit towards their deductibles. HSA cards are also accepted for payment. Medications and Labs will be billed to the patient’s insurance. If insurance coverage is poor for medications and labs, Dr. Douros takes measures to help keep the medications and labs affordable.

  • Although GLP-1’s are popular in the media lately, there are several well studied anti obesity medicine drugs that are available. Dr. Douros looks to correct foundational and fundamental abnormalities that cause her patients to struggle with their weight so that they achieve long term success with their weight. GLP-1’s may or may not be appropriate for every patient and for every phase of their weight loss.
